The main improvement over earlier bayonets was the introduction of the integral collar to the end of the socket forming a bridge over the mortise through which the musket sight passes.

Early style shield attachment with a rounded shape,  later shields have a more tear drop form. 

          

Crown/Broad arrow mark found on the shank denoting board of ordnance inspection, c.1730-38.
