“THE ESSEX REGIMENT”

The Essex Regiment Officers, worn 1881-1882 ?

Very rare pattern with acanthus scroll ends, possibly only worn for a few years between 1881 and 1882, the special pattern acorn ends being adopted by the Dress Regulations of 1883. The centre badge being of different construction to the later acorn patterns and of superior quality.

With special pattern Acorn ends as per 1883 Dress regulations.

The Essex Regiment Officers.

This is similar to Fig.211 above, however, the sphinx is smaller and made as part of the shield, rather then separate.  The shield has never been enameled. Other small differences to the wreath and castle.

It has been suggested the 1st Battalion wore the enameled clasp, and the 2nd Battalion the non enameled clasp.
