“HIGHLAND MOUNTED INFANTRY” / “ALBANY”

“THE KINGS OWN LIGHT INFANTRY”

This is an interesting clasp, I have recorded a number of examples of this, it is a pre-1881 clasp with the number 51 removed from between the bugle strings. This suggests it was continued to be worn post 1881. The bugle rather than horn is unusual.
It is possible the numbered example recorded by Ryan fig.80 was one of these unmodified, and she just made a small mistake in the layout of the outer title as she used an old auction description.
All examples I’ve see have matching benchmarks, so the centre is not a mismatch. No apostrophe in KINGS.

Rare variation with a different style of Dragon, I have also observed this dragon on a “The Berkshire Regiment” clasp.

Comparison of the two dragon variations, it may possibly be due to two different makers supplying  the 1st and 2nd Battalions, given that the two styles of dragon were used in both “THE” and “ROYAL” versions of the clasps.
